Elementary's Lestrade

Generally I enjoy Elementary’s different take on the classic Arthur Conan Doyle characters, but there’s something about their version of D.I. Gareth Lestrade that I’m not down with.  I get that he is an unrepentant famewhore who loved basking in Sherlock’s success but he doesn’t seem to care about Sherlock beyond that and I’m finding that rather annoying.

Aren’t they supposed to be friends or at least friendly?  I’m seeing this care and worry on Sherlock and Joan’s part, but Lestrade himself seems very self-centered and kind of cold to them.  Plus, I’m not finding him that likeable.  I didn’t like his taking credit for Sherlock’s deductions back when they worked together in Scotland Yard and then he continued to so, even after Sherlock asked him not to in the S2 premier.

I also don’t appreciate how dismissive he is of Joan, as if Joan isn’t a detective in her own right and that she’s just like Lestrade, not really offering anything in her partnership with Sherlock.  Moriarty isn’t supposed to understand the Holmes/Watson bond because the character is an evil criminal mastermind who eschews human emotions, unless they can be used for manipulation.  Lestrade should be a bit better, if only because he’s one of the good guys.  He should understand the trust one places in a partner, if only because he was with the police and he understands the concept of “working together for the greater good.”
