H50 Drabble: A Thing a'Thinging

Here is a 156 word  H50 McDanno + Grace drabble for the Number Challenge at [livejournal.com profile] 1_million_words

“Danno?”

Danny looked up in concern at Grace’s hesitant voice.  “What is it Monkey?

“What’s 27 Things a thinging?”

Danny didn’t think he heard right.  “I’m sorry Grace, but what’s “a thing a thinging?”

Grace tried not to roll her eyes.  “DANNO, that’s what I’m asking you?!”

“Third base,” Steve replied helpfully.

“You,” Danny pointed to Steve, “not helping.”

Danny motioned for Grace to sit next to him, his arm automatically going around her shoulder, knowing that his answer would bring them both to tears. (Steve would manfully hide his.)  “Your Uncle Matty and I used to make up words to the famous Christmas carols.”

He smiled wistfully, “Used to make our Ma laugh every time.”  He leaned his head down and whispered, “How about I teach you the words and we keep up the tradition?”

Grace nodded tearfully and Steve quickly joined his Williams' on the couch, surrounding the grieving pair in a tight hug.

Steve! What even!? LOL

I used to make up words to songs, I think I mostly got that from listening to all the kid songs from when my mom was a preschool teacher.

Making up lyrics to Christmas carols is a must :)

Steve's aside is the refrain from Abbott and Costello's famous "Who's on first?" comedy skit. Is it too obscure a reference?

Maybe a little bit, but I do know of the skit and have seen different versions of it.
