A Fringe Question

I am confused about a plot point from last night's episode:

Was the guy who owned the abandoned dairy farm the killer of both girls?  Or are we supposed to think that Newton did the killings to find Peter and the dairy guy was a convenient scapegoat?  But then again, the cop was found alive at the dairy farm as well--did the guy kidnap him?

I think I was so confused and could barely concentrate on the crime because I was so concerned about Walter's welfare.  And I love how Astrid and Olivia just stepped right in to help to take care of him.  They really are a family :):)

My original guess was that the dairy guy was the killer and Peter just made unwarranted correlations between his method of killing and Newton and his own place in the scheme of things. Lack of sleep made him see Newton everywhere.

But then Newton really did show up.

So, now I'm confused. *g*

My first thought when seeing Walter in the store was "why isn't Astrid with him"?! *g* It was cool of the show to point out that she, an FBI agent, has basically become a babysitter and housekeeper; I was thinking the same thing.

It does seem to me that the mystery was not that well though-out and unnecessarily complicated by a bunch of coincidences.

I am looking forward to the two Walters meeting up and Peter's reactions to all of this.
