Death Comes to Pemberley

Has anyone else seen this?  Holy crap but I can not get past just how horribly unattractive the actors are who are playing Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy amd I know that's shallow but it's disconcerting to see the pretty and sparkingly Elizabeth played by such an older and drab woman.  And the characaterization seems wrong--since when does Elizabeth call her husband "Darcy?"

This was on TV last Christmas here in the UK. I tuned in to the first episode purely because its P&P based and that is my favourite Jane Austen of all time! (The BBC miniseries is one of my favourite period drama adaptations of all time too!) Anywho, I don't think I even watched the whole of episode 1, it was just awful. I'm not much for the murder mystery type of a thing anyway, but the acting in this was awful, and I wasn't buying any of the actors and actresses as the characters they were supposed to be playing. My BFF actually liked it, but to this day I can't understand why. Awful, especially when compared to the quality of the Jennifer Ehle/Colin Firth miniseries of the original book.

Yes, The Jennifer Ehle version was gorgeous, and I also enjoyed Kiera Knightley's version but this older chick playing Elizabeth after these two great actresses? I don't think so :)

I think I've seen that actress in some other BBC adaptation, maybe a Dickens. I think she was good in it, but not especially pretty, no. I could see her as Anne Elliot as a stretch, maybe, but not Lizzie. I might end up watching out of curiosity as I am a Regency slut and will often take anything.

Incidentally, did you ever see the Persuasion from 1995 with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds? They both seemed unattractive at the start to me, but grew on me by the end to where I thought they were just perfect. They gave her a very subtle makeover (just some blush and bangs by the end) and he just opened up a little. That one's still in my top 3 Austens ever!

I watched the actress in The Bletchley Circle and her clenched jaw, stiff upper lip and generally unsmiling acting matched with the character perfectly but as Elizabeth Bennett? No freakin' way!

Not even Anne Elliott who we know was secretly pretty and just needed her Captain Wentworth to bring it out :):)

And 1995's Persuasion is one of my all time favorite interpretations of Jane Austen's novels--second only to Jennifer Ehle/Colin Firth's Pride and Prejudice :)

Cannot comment on the actor or actress since I have not seen them but I do recall reading a few P&P fanfics where Elizabeth calls her husband that and it always struck me as odd.

Yes, I took a literature class that had the Austen novels as it's focus and the teacher specifically said that women in that time period who called men by their last names where considered low rent. The heroine would always say "Mr." where as the classless chick would just say the last name.

As you can see, I've been thinking way too much about this :):)
