I hope everyone is having a fab New Year’s Eve, and because it's that time of year, I feel the need to do a recap of all of my post-Christmas theatrical events:
On Dec. 26th, I took my mom to see the ballet The Nutcracker at The Academy of Music in Center City Philadelphia. I continue to be impressed by the ballerinas dedication to their craft and that because of it, the show is gorgeous—the dancing, outfits, all of it. The Pennsylvania Ballet put on a lovely performance and it’s rather cool to see how the costumes have changed over the years.
On Dec. 28th, I saw a radio stage play of Meet Me in St. Louis at The Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, PA. It was wonderfully inventive and cleverly staged—the women’s 1940’s outfits and hair styles were especially gorgeous—but the funniest part were the commercials that were read out loud. One was for Camel cigarettes, another was for clothing for overweight girls called Chubettes and the last was for a sanitized tapeworm to help you lose weight.
And then on today, Dec. 31st, I saw the film Saving Mr. Banks. It was absolutely wonderful and it gave me a new insight into just how canny Walt Disney was, and it also made me want to rewatch Mary Poppins and read more about her authors’ life. Also, Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson’s need Academy Awards, STAT!
So all in all, I’ve had a damn fun and interesting Christmas/New Year’s extravaganza and I hope 2014 is just as fabulous—not just theatrically but that all of our lives continue to be fulfilling and full of meaning.
And just a quick question for my fellow Americans: why does the ScyFy channel have a Twilight Zone marathon every New Year's Eve? FREAKY!!
