guineamania’s birthday—Happy Belated Birthday!
A psychiatrist would have a field day with James Olsen’s insistence on being called “James” and not “jimmy.”
“Jimmy” was the name for a pesky little brother and not the name for a serious photojournalist. “Jimmy” idolized Perry White and Lois Lane and was the personal friend to the Man of Steel--he even had a special Superman signal watch.
No, “Jimmy” would forever be seen as a kid and not allowed to grow up.
While James liked many aspects of his life as “Jimmy” he yearned to step out of the shadow of The Daily Planet’s darlings Lane and Kent and carve his own journalistic career.
At first Lucy had been supportive of his plans, but when he decided he needed to leave Metropolis to achieve his goals, she balked at the idea of moving to another state and starting over in a new city, and he realized he was going to have to go it alone.
His new life in National City was everything he wanted; he was thriving as the new art director at CatCo, he had the respect of his boss Cat Grant and he was making new friends.
And if he was honest with himself, he’d have to admit that it was his special relationship with Kara that was the biggest highlight of his new life.
The irony of Kara being Supergirl didn’t escape his notice but unlike his friendship with Clark, James always felt like an equal partner to the superheroine and not her sidekick.
He knew that he and Kara had a great future ahead of them and he thanked his lucky stars that he had the opportunity to share in the adventures and to help save the world.
“Jimmy” would never have been able to say that.
