This is a 280 word Star Trek drabble for the Numbers Challenge at
1_million_words ENJOY!!
“Bones, will you hurry up?!”
“Easy kid, you’d think it was Christmas morning with all of your hootin' and hollerin,” Leonard McCoy, sometimes known as Bones. grumbled back. Jim just impatiently rolled his eyes in response.
Secretly, McCoy was glad to see the light come back into his best friend’s eyes. For months after Nero’s attack, Jim had been like a shell of himself. He was still performing his duties as captain, but he was too detached, all of his previous exuberance completely absent.
McCoy was becoming increasingly worried at his best friend’s almost depressive state and he wasn’t the only one to notice. Spock, Uhura and even Scotty pulled him aside to ask if Jim was okay, and despite his and Jim’s close bond, all McCoy could do was shrug helplessly.
But now, with the repairs of the Enterprise nearly completed, Jim’s mood shifted into a cautiously happier state. Suddenly, he had a purpose again and the purpose was being captain of the Enterprise, protecting his crew and saving entire planets.
“We really need to look into your whole hero complex,” McCoy muttered, but Jim ignored him.
Instead, he had a map spread across their borrowed vehicle and he was eagerly plotting their course. “We need to take Route 460 because that’s the fastest way to get to the shipyard.”
Jim folded the map neatly and pressed it gently into McCoy’s chest, leaving his hand entangled in Bones’ shirt.
McCoy could feel the warmth of Jim’s skin through the thick paper and he tentatively reached up and grasped Jim’s fingers. His best friend grinned softly at him before speaking quietly.
“And then we get to see our baby again.”
