200 word drabble at the 1_million_words weekend 5 words challenge.

I had the letter P and I was able to put in 3 of the words.  I am planning on a followup drabble using the other two P words I couldn't fit in.  I would also like to add this to [livejournal.com profile] haldoor's word count.

Afternoons spent at her Uncle Steve’s beach were the best part of the “Danno” weekends for Grace.

She smiled when she saw Steve reach over and deliberately muss Danno’s carefully styled hair and her dad’s outraged yelp before quickly smoothing the strands down made her smile ever wider.

But her smile vanished when Lt. Catherine moved to touch Steve’s arm to get his attention.

Grace was dismayed to see Danny turn away from the couple and make his way towards where Grace was sitting.

But Danno had barely taken a few steps before Steve was calling out.  “Hey, Danny where you going?  Aren’t you going to pontificate on my lack of barbecuing skills?”

Danny stopped and turned before shooting Steve an incredulous look.  “Steven, I do not have the time, energy or inclination to list all of the ways your supposed barbequing are slowly poisoning us, creating more pollution and most importantly, not actually using any barbeque sauce.”

And the two were off and running, their bantering tones familiar to everyone within earshot.

Grace nodded, pleased that all was right with the world, but she didn’t miss the sadly poignant look on Catherine’s face when she looked at Steve and Danno.

ETA:  Here is the followup drabble:

It had been Grace’s idea to invite Step-Stan’s brother Charlie to her Little League game and she made sure to have Catherine sit next to him during the game.

And Grace watched in satisfaction as the two laughed together.  In fact, the smile didn’t leave either adult’s face for the entirety of the game, even when they went into extra innings.

Catherine was a nice lady who deserved to have a nice boyfriend, and it was time for her to realize that  Uncle Steve wasn’t going to be that boyfriend.

Out of the corner of her eye, Grace could see that  Danno and Uncle Steve were still arguing with the umpire about her teammate Casey’s base advancement from the catcher’s dropped third strike.

Or rather, Danny was still arguing while Steve was trying to pull him away.

“Danno, calm your nerves.  Do you want to get thrown out of the game again?”

Danny looked askance at his friend.  “Steven, there is a plethora of rules that constitute an official Little League game and I’m just making sure that they are all being followed.”

Grace went to sit next to her mom on the bleachers, knowing that game wasn’t going to resume for about another ten minutes.  Her mom nudged her shoulder and nodded towards Catherine and Charlie.  “Well done, darling.”

Grace gaped at her mom in surprise but Rachel just laughed.  “It’s okay to want the people you love to be happy together.”  This time she gestured to Steve and Danny.  “Even if they don’t quite know it yet.”

Rachel then winked at her daughter.  “Time to hatch another plot, tiny mastermind.”
