This was another strange episode.
I’m not sure what we’re supposed to think about the Steve/Catherine relationship. She obviously wants romance from him—she actually spells it out that she wants him to take her to a fancy restaurant—but then she refuses to call him her boyfriend and is happy to keep secrets from him regarding his mom.
I did like that we learned that Catherine’s leave is almost up so the next episode we see her in, she’ll hopefully mention where she’s stationed now and maybe she’ll be back in her uniform. I also liked that she got the over the top/extended action sequence this week, complete with throwing the bad guy down a flight of stairs. Always a plus :)
But then she falls for the oldest trick in the book--fake crying so the adult in the room will feel sorry for the kid so that he can escape the room. And maybe that was such an annoying scene because the kid playing Ethan was so horrendous. We go from last week’s kid in peril Lucy who was so believably afraid and could emote like nobody’s business to this emotionless, dead-eyed child “actor.” He and the man who played his father were such bad actors that I was left wondering why Five-0 were working so hard to save their lives.
And there is no way Steve was a punk or a smart ass as a child—he was a Boy Scout and I bet he was all “Yes Sirs” to adults and especially ones in authority. Trying to draw nonexistent parallels to make us like an unlikable character didn’t work with Lori and it’s not working with the kid either.
I was rather thrown by Chin’s response to drunken Uncle’s slight to Danny.
Drunk Uncle: Why did you bring this haole cop here?
Chin: Technically I’m a cop too.
Drunk Uncle: Yes, but you’re family.
Why didn’t Chin nod to Danny and quietly answer, “So is he.” Isn’t the Five-0 supposed to be each other’s ohana?
I liked that we got to hear that the custody hearing is still on-going and that Danny is making an effort to be amicable to Rachel. I also like that Steve promptly invited Danny to his house for Christmas when he learned that Danny would be without his Monkey. Although sitting alone eating pizza and watching Miracle on 34th Street sound like a better way to spend the holiday than hanging out with Super-spy Doris.
Not enough Kono—what is up with that?
